Subject: NW List Changes and Improvements
This is a special notice about some changes and improvements which are being made to this email list service this year.
The first, which is now done, is the elimination of near-duplicate bulletins. You probably received two copies of yesterdays bulletin, but a file comparison showed they were not quite identical. "Skier" had been replaced with "Skier and Snowboarder", that was the only change.
This is common for the larger Forest Service centers, to issue a bulletin and then re-post it with a few minor changes.
Our list is now set up to mail you the first new copy of the day. Any later edits or mid-day updates will not be mailed to the listserve. This will keep your email to one copy per day. The website version is still updated hourly and will reflect any minor changes as well as any afternoon updates. Todays first empty bulletin was a result of an error in this improvement, sorry about that!
Other improvements planned for the next week or two are to introduce a separate list for e-mailing an html version of the bulletin. Subscribers will be able to choose which list they prefer, or stay on both - text and/or html. The mountain weather bulletin may also be sent to a text list of its own. The weather bulletin receives more traffic than the avalanche bulletin on the web.
There may be a few update list e-mails like this to the entire list when these improvements are implemented. They should be few in number and once everything new is working well the only mail will be the bulletins
themselves, as always. Html maillists have been implemented for Colorado and Utah, and the limiting to one issue per day has also been done on the Utah list. So there should be few problems introducing these features to this list now.
We hope you enjoy and appreciate the e-mail list service.
