This was sent to the Northwest US lists

Date: Tue, 24 Dec 2002 01:06:16 -0700 (MST)
Subject: NEW: html list, weather list

There are now two separate email lists for this bulletin, one for an html version and one for a text version. There is also an email list for the mountain weather report (in text). Information on the new html list follows. The weather list is csac-nw-wx@csac.org and you can subscribe to it from the webpage or from the listserve page.

Since I don't know which format people prefer for the avalanche bulletins I have copied the existing mail list file to the new one, so everyone will be subscribed to both versions. It is much easier to unsubscribe yourself
than to subscribe since the latter requires authentication. This also allows everyone to see how both versions come through for them and then make their choice.

I have tried to make it as easy as possible to unsubscribe from the list service you don't want. On the html list (and the webpage for the bulletin) there is a line at the bottom for subscribing - this now has separate links for the text and html lists. Click on the one you want to get off of, and when you see the form uncheck "subscribe" and check "unsubscribe". That's all there is to it.

From the text version there is an address for the mail lists page at the top, just copy it and paste it into your browser window. That page allows you to subscribe or unsubscribe from any of our lists via the online interface and also has a page describing how to unsubscribe by e-mail.

About the html version -

We are just sending a copy of the web-posted page to the list, right from the server. There are no graphics included in the mail at this point. This keeps the size of the e-mail reasonable. There is a header which specifies that all links for the graphics and the glossed terms are relative to our home page.

If you are not online when you read the bulletin you may or may not see the graphics, but the formatting should be correct other than that. If you have visited the webpage recently or read a previous issue while
online the graphics may be in your cache and appear anyway. You will not be able to follow the links to the glossary if you are not online. But the links will still call attention to key terms, and these will show up
highlighted if you print out the html version to post or distribute.

If you prefer the email list with the html version but it does not come through properly please let us know. In the short term you may need to stay with the text version, but if we have multiple reports of the same problem I will make an effort to fix it.
