Calorie

A calorie is one of the units used in science and engineering to measure heat. The quantity of heat needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water one degree centigrade is defined as a calorie.

Other units for heat are BTUs (British Thermal Units, l BTU = 252 calories) and Joules.
