Weak Layer

A snow layer identified in the snow stratigraphy which is relatively
weaker that other snow layers. Traditional methods identify this as a
weakness to layer-parallel penetration (see hand
test hardness). Now it is more commonly identified as a weakness to
shear stress (see shear test).
