About this Glossary

This glossary was scanned in the spring or summer of 1997 from a variety of print sources using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and a spell checker. The text files were then converted to html using a simple (custom) PERL script. At the start of the 1998-99 season begins we went to a frames layout for the glossary.

Since 1997 most of the entries have been cleaned up and many of the definitions or descriptions improved. This is an ongoing process. While most of the technical problems have been eliminated a few lingering small problems may still be possible. A link may open in this frame when it shouldn't, or it may open a new browser when it shouldn't. Suggestions and problem reports are always welcome.

As of the spring of 2002 all terms had been reviewed, though not all had been updated and improved. They are all on the same template, similar terms have been combined, and some of the definitions have been improved. While the original print glossary which we scanned as a basis for this was prepared by a PhD well known in the field many of the definitions are vague and a few are outright incorrect. We've tried to fix most of the worst errors but this also continues to be an ongoing effort.

The process of checking and improving this glossary is ongoing. If you find something you feel could be improved let us know. Also let us know if you are looking for a definition of a term which does not appear here so we can consider adding it.
