Avalanche Incident
KATHMANDU, May 17 (Reuters) - French mountaineer Chantal Mauduit was found dead on the slopes of the world's seventh highest peak, Nepal's Tourism Ministry said on Sunday.
It said 34-year-old Mauduit from Les Houches was found dead in her tent at 6,400 metres (21,000 feet) on Mount Dhaulagiri I in north-central Nepal on Saturday with her regular mountain guide, Sherpa Ang Tserang.
Mauduit was part of a Spanish team.
According to the Spaniards' agents in Kathmandu, two members of the Spanish group who had been stranded in a camp above Mauduit's for a few days due to bad weather, found the two bodies on their descent.
In Paris, the French climbers' association Eolienne said they had been surprised during the night by a small avalanche and died from asphyxiation.
Mauduit had successfully scaled six of the world's 14 highest mountains, and was hoping to conquer two more, the 8,167 metre Dhaulagiri I and nearby Annapurna I in the near future.
Her practice since 1992 had been to climb without the use of oyxgen tanks, Eoliennne said in a printed statement.
Her first book, "J'Habite au Paradis" (I live in Paradise), was published last October.
