August 17, 2006 - Avalanche victims families billed for unsuccessful SAR

The family of a snowboarder whose body was found two months after he died in an avalanche in the French Alps have told of their anger after receiving a £9,000 insurance bill for the failed rescue attempts. Sam Harber and his friend James Rourke died while snowboarding off-piste in April last year. While Mr Rourke's body was found a few days after the accident, Mr Harber's family suffered an unbearable wait as poor weather hampered rescue efforts. He was eventually found two months after the accident. His family have now been told insurers are refusing to pay for the unsuccessful rescue attempts. The families have been asked to pay £9,000 each. More ...

A man rescued from an avalanche with his heart and lungs arrested in April was revived nearly four hours later - the longest time in Japan during which a heart stopped before recovering, Shinshu University Hospital said. May 16, 2006 -Unexploded shells close a Yellowstone pass

Sylvan Pass in Yellowstone National Park was closed Monday after a construction worker found an unexploded 55-pound shell used to control avalanches. Park officials called in a team from Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls to remove and detonate the shell. More ...

The well-trained nose of Kuri the avalanche dog helped divert a potentially explosive situation Thursday near Snoqualmie Summit. Kuri, a New Zealand border collie used in avalanche rescues, found a 25-pound white canvas bag of explosive material that had been lost in the snow earlier in the day by a crew doing avalanche control. Officials of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race said a helicopter, an avalanche expert and explosives were in place at the Rainy Pass Lodge in preparation for bombing potential danger areas to safely bring down snow. "They're going to try to stabilize the pass," said Bill Merchant, director of the Iditarod Trail Invitational, which precedes the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race through the area on its way to McGrath.
