October 15 , 2012 - Avalanche not an 'inherent' skiing risk, lawsuit says

The avalanche that killed a 13-year-old boy last winter is not an “inherent” risk for skiers, and isn't protected by state law, say legal documents filed by Taft Conlin's parents. His parents, Dr. Louise Ingalls and Dr. Stephen Conlin, sued Vail Resorts saying their son died because the company's negligence created an “avalanche trap” that killed him. More ...

The Forest Service's report about the avalanche, issued Friday, said only that Vail Resorts complied with its operating procedures and Forest Service permit requirements. Mohammad Khalid, who has a master degree in electronics from University of Peshawar, says that the machine worked on the principle of resonance and could be used to preempt uncontrolled avalanches that threaten human settlements.
