Snow and Avalanche Center Course and Module Reviewers

Help Review Avalanche Institute Courses and Course Modules

From time to time we have a need for people to review new or updated material in our curricula. These reviews are intended to provide very specific feedback, or to calibrate our outcomes. If we are looking for reviewers and you are interested please read the objectives and requirements carefully before filling out the form.

You can apply online by following the link below, after reading the objectives and requirements.

Level 1 Challenges - Modules 1, 4, 5, 6

If you are not familiar with the online program you can find out about it on the details page. There are links there to complete descriptions of the modules to be reviewed.

These modules, along with some others, have been in use and we have feedback from students who have completed them. This feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Feedback on the instructional content and methods is not our primary goal. Our goal is to benchmark our outcomes, as measured by our quizzes.

Primary Objective - To establish a preliminary success rate and average scores for module challenges by students who have recently completed a traditional Level 1 recreational avalanche course.

Secondary Objective - To obtain comparative feedback on the actual instruction from students who have recently completed a Level 1 course through another program.

Requirements - Reviewers must have completed a recreational US Level 1 or Canadian AST Level 1 (formerly the CAA RAC) within the past two years. For review purposes we are not interested in outcomes for people with no current formal training. Regardless of experience or other factors. Also, NSP courses and programs such as the National Avalanche School do not count since their objectives are different.)

Process - Reviewers will take the module challenges and provide feedback on the assessments and on the topics or questions included. Following the challenge and their feedback on that reviewers will be permitted to take the actual module, going through the instructional material. They will then provide feedback on that, especially pertaining to how it compares with the coverage of the same or similar material in their traditional course.

Compensation - In return for their thoughtful feedback reviewers are able to complete four modules. The total cost of registering for these individually would be $145. They can complete the actual modules whether or not they pass the challenge assessments, and are encouraged to do so. There may or may not be an opportunity to review additional modules in the future, this will be determined by our course development needs as well as the quality of feedback provided on these four modules. All modules successfully completed will be entered into the student records. This may mean that prerequisites for certain advanced modules are met, and the value of the four modules may be applied to the cost of a complete course if desired. This amounts to approximately a 50% discount.
