Digging snowpits is the best way to learn about snow and avalanches; the Backcountry Skier's Field Book is for the serious backcountry skier or snowboarder (and avalanche professional) who is interested in keeping track of the snowpack and staying alive in avalanche country. Avalanche professionals track the snowpack throughout the winter and so too should backcountry skiers and riders. The snowpack under goes changes due to temperature, settlement, and water vapor transmission; snow grains become cohesive and/or cohesionless over time.
