Ukrainian avalanche kills four schoolgirls

KIEV, The Reuters World Service via Individual Inc. : An avalanche killed
four schoolgirls on a skiing holiday in Ukraine's Carpathian mountains, a
spokesman for the civil defence authority said on Wednesday.
The girls, two aged 12 and two aged 14, were buried in snow on Tuesday along
with their schoolteacher and seven classmates during a walk in the
mountains, Oleg Bykov said.
``The teacher and four of the children dug themselves out and ran for help
to the nearby tourist complex,'' Bykov said.
``Three other children were rescued, but the bodies of the girls, who were
from Kiev, were found only today,'' he said.
The danger of avalanches in the Carpathians, a popular resort site, has
increased in recent days, the national weather centre said.
