The Slovenian Vanja Furlan, 30, who was featured in
September for his new route on Ama Dablam, perished 
in an August 15 avalanche on the North Face of Mojstrovka
in the Julian Alps. Voted Alpinist of the year in Slovenia,
Furlan was instrumental in getting his countrymen to take 
alpine tactics to the Himalayas.
