LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 28/3/06 The thaw is continuing with rain overnight and this morning further saturating the snowpack. Wet snow instabilities are present on many steep aspects above 900m. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). Hazard of falling ice and rocks on steeper ground. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 29/3/06 Cold conditions will return with some light snow showers during Wednesday. The existing snowpack will start to re-freeze and stabilise overnight. Localised areas of fresh windslab will form in areas sheltered from the South-West winds. Accumulations will generally be restricted to scarp slopes with a North, North-East and East aspect above 1000m. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow at all levels. ICING: Freezing level expected to lower to around 500m. COMMENT: Strong SW winds developing.
