Avalanche risks in the Western Himalayas have increased due to climate change and human activities with 30-40 deaths annually due to such disasters, a study published by Springer Nature has revealed. The researchers developed a Combined Avalanche Vulnerability Index to evaluate risk based on exposure (weather and snow conditions), sensitivity (topography and human activity), and adaptive capacity. The study assessed avalanche vulnerability in 11 districts of HP and Uttarakhand. Last month, a massive avalanche in Chamoli's Mana area killed eight Border Roads Organisation (BRO) contractual workers and trapped 54.

Two men miraculously survived after getting buried under snow for several minutes near Moud village in the Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh, when an avalanche struck while the villagers were searching for a water source on Tuesday. The avalanche struck around 12 pm when residents and employees were trying to restore the water supply to the village, which had been disrupted because of the heavy spells of snowfall in Lahaul Spiti district. The massive snow that rushed down the mountain buried Nawan Tenzing and Padma Jimdai as the rest of the villagers watched in horror. The villagers managed to rescue both men after about 15 minutes.
"The recent heavy snowfall and avalanches damaged the four water supply tanks of the village, and the residents were searching for a natural water source when they were caught in the avalanche. Both men remained buried for at least 15 minutes under tens of feet of snow as the villagers started digging out
the snow. The villagers and employees were already carrying shovels, so they immediately started digging out the snow," said Jangmo. "After around 15 minutes of constant digging, the villagers managed to bring both of them out. There must have been an air cavity inside that enabled both of them to breathe. It's nothing short of a miracle," she added.
The avalanche did not deter the villagers as they resumed the work of restoring the water supply after rescuing the two men. After searching for more than four hours, they finally found a natural water source and connected water pipes to it, ensuring supply to the village. Lahaul Spiti was cut off from the rest of the state on Feb 25 following heavy spells of snow for days, disrupting road connectivity and water supply and throwing the entire district into darkness.
