New to the Swiss White Risk Avalanche App

Winter sports enthusiasts will now have an even simpler, clearer and faster way to report avalanches while out in the field. White Risk, the avalanche prevention app developed by the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF), has a new input interface for this year's winter season. "We want to make it even easier for people out and about in the mountains to send us this vital data," says SLF avalanche warning officer Lukas Dürr. This helps the avalanche warning service to verify its forecasts and provides an even better picture of the current situation in Switzerland. Also new are avalanche bulletins from France and additional features for planning tours safely in snowy terrain.

A skier was carried about 150 feet after a hard slab of snow broke off at 10,600 feet. The skier was not hurt after triggering an avalanche on Mt. Olsen in Virginia Lakes in Mono County this past weekend. A report on Facebook says, "Early season turns can be a powerful draw to backcountry skiers, but this is a great reminder that avalanches are on the menu. It is also important to consider that triggering an avalanche at the moment comes with elevated consequences due to the low coverage and exposed rocks."
