30th January 2026 - It is the latest incident in what has been a grim month across the Alps and the Pyrenees. The snow pack remains highly unstable in places. The avalanche occurred shortly before 11 a.m. in an off-piste area in the Fée Ouest sector, at an altitude of around 2,500m. A 59 year old man was found in cardiac arrest when the emergency services arrived. Resuscitation efforts succeeded in restoring his cardiac activity. He was evacuated by helicopter to hospital in Grenoble in a critical condition.

CCTV footage shows a shopkeeper in Anhui, China, clearing snow from outside his store. After removing most of it, more snow suddenly falls onto his back, prompting him to step away from the building. Seconds later, a large avalanche of snow drops from the shop roof – exactly where the man had been standing moments before. The footage was filmed on January 23, 2026.

Ganderbal, Jan 28: An avalanche hit the Sonamarg tourist resort late Tuesday night; however, there was no loss of life, officials said. The massive avalanche was caught on CCTV camera, showing snow engulfing buildings, officials said. However, they said that there were no reports of any loss of life. Sonamarg and most parts of Kashmir received moderate to heavy snowfall since December 24. About 4 feet of snow has accumulated at the health resort.
A Police team, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), timely reported to the area to assess the situation. After the avalanche, the Police in Ganderbal on Wednesday issued an advisory, urging people, tourists, and transporters to strictly avoid visiting or halting in avalanche-prone areas. Locals and hoteliers living around the avalanche spot said that the situation was normal. They said such avalanches occur at the same spot often, and there was no need to panic. They said that the footage mainly showed winds generated by the avalanche.

KABUL, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- An avalanche killed at least two people and injured four others in eastern Afghanistan's Nuristan province, the official Bakhtar news agency reported on Wednesday. The incident happened when a group of villagers was returning home. A sudden mass of snow slid down the mountainside, trapping the victims under heavy snow, the report said. The injured were taken to a local health center for treatment. Heavy snowfall in recent days has increased the risk of avalanches in Afghanistan's mountainous areas, where such natural disasters are common during winter seasons.
