Cyberspace Snow and Avalanche Center Update http://www.avalanche-center.org/ Lots of work has been going into our web site in preparation for our third year of serving the public and the avalanche professional community. Here is an overview of what to look for this year, section by section. Take some time and check out the site every once in a while - it changes just about daily. There are many new things on the horizon which we announce over the next few weeks. General: The home page has been redesigned and all graphics and their tags have been redone throughout the site for faster loading. From any page with our logo at the top left you can return to the home page by clicking the logo. A big news item is that we will be starting up a store on the web site - a separate announcement will follow on that soon. Our organizational page now has a collection of graphics you can use for linking to us and info on how to allow people to subscribe to bulletin distribution lists from your web site. Let us know if you need assistance with this. (The Organizational page can be reached by clicking the main photo header on the home page or any section page.) Bulletins: There is now a quick index at the top of the page to the regions covered. We also have a page dedicated to our mail list distribution system - you can go to this page to subscribe and/or unsubscribe from any of our email distribution lists. New bulletins this year include the central Sierra (Warnings only - they do not issue regular bulletins), additional info from Italy, and a regular feed on the Missoula area bulletin. Many of the bulletins are now automaticaly put into html - see Canada, SW Montana, and Utah for examples. Education: This has been reorganized and links to new material on the net have been added. A research page has been added. Presentation of the course listings is being improved (we are just now adding new course listings). In addition to course listings we will have a directory of schools and individuals you can contact. We have created a separate page for our avalanche in the schools material. Watch for some new basic educational material soon - when we get time to finish it up. Incidents: These will now be presented in a table format which will indicate at a glance number of fatalities, date, place, activity, and what type of info we have on the incident. Archived bulletins for the day of the accident are linked to when applicable. Last years incidents have been moved to a page of their own and are in the new format. This years table has begun with a climbing accident in Nepal. We also have an online incident report form. But hopefully you won't need that! Professional Resources: We have made much of this section public now. We will be adding additional weather resources, there is info on research, conference info, news about people, and links of Professional interest. Other Info: This is our miscellaneous section. It is accumulating a variety of interesting material which does not fit perfectly anywhere else. HTML standards: We make every effort to keep things text compatible and check it with lynx periodically. Sometimes things get ahead of us so if you have a browser which does not display something well please let us know and we will fix it. We have begun to use tables in many places, but nothing more advanced than that. No Frames, no java, etc. Not yet. Maybe when it is entirely the standard for everyone. This is everyones site, so please help out with it by sending us content items, letting us know about new related sites, volunteering to help out, and contributing financially. To learn more about the organization see our Organizational page (www.avalanche-center.org/Organization). Think snow, and think safe!
