JAMMU, India, Feb 27 (Reuters) - At least 20 people died when a snow avalanche hit villages in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Friday.
Nine people, including six members of a family, were killed after their house was buried under snow on Thursday night in Chandimarh village, about 246 km (153 miles) north of Jammu, the state's winter capital.
Earlier on Wednesday night, 11 people died after a snow avalanche hit Mangatarigam village in Banihal town, 200 km (125 miles) east of Jammu. Six of the dead were women and five were children, police said.
"These are remote parts of the state. We receive information slowly," Kuldeep Khuda, inspector general of police, Jammu told Reuters.
Police said there had been heavy snowfall in the area in the past few days.
